Milford, CT, Venue for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

The Center for the Arts in Milford, Connecticut, will begin their 2014 “Film Series” with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) on Friday, Jan. 30, 2014.

The program will begin at 7:30 pm.

Bogart Fest in Buffalo Includes Two Lorre Films

The Old Chestnut Film Society, which meets at the Philip Sheridan School in Buffalo, New York, will include two Peter Lorre movies in their Humphrey Bogart film fest, “Bogie! Tough and Tender”.

The Maltese Falcon (1941) will be shown Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at 7:30 pm.

All Through the Night (1942) will be shown Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at 7:30 pm.

The complete festival schedule – which began on Oct. 11, 2013 and runs until May 9, 2014 – is posted on the Ken-Ton Community Education website.

Each film will be shown in the Community Room of the Philip Sheridan School. Although refreshments will not be provided, attendees are welcome to bring their own. Dr. Grant Golden – founder, director, and projectionist at the Old Chestnut Film Society – will host each film, including short subjects and door prizes.

The Philip Sheridan School is located at 3200 Elmwood Avenue, in Buffalo, New York. Parking is available at the school.

Tickets are $6 for both residents and non-residents. A ticket for the entire series is also available for $32.

Northwest Film Center Runs The Chase This Weekend

The Northwest Film Center in Portland, Oregon, will include The Chase (1946) as part of their “Treasures from the UCLA Archive” film festival this month, featuring a selection of the restored movie prints shown during UCLA’s 2013 “Festival of Preservation”. The festival begins on Friday, January 3, and ends on Thursday, January 30, 2014.

The Chase will be shown Saturday, Jan. 4, at 4 pm, with a second showing on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 7 pm.

Funded by The Film Foundation and the Franco-American Cultural fund, preservation of The Chase involved incomplete 35mm nitrate prints and negatives, both original and dupe, as well as 16mm acetate picture and track negatives.

The Chase will be shown at the Portland Art Museum, in the Whitsell Auditorium, located at 1219 SW Park Avenue, in Portland, Oregon. The Whitsell Auditorium is located on the lower level of the Belluschi Building.

The entrance to the Whitsell Auditorium is located at the Hoffman Lobby entrance, located on the north side of the Museum’s red brick building at Madison and Park avenues, near the Museum Gift Shop and outdoor sculpture garden. The Portland Art Museum is located in downtown Portland, on the historic Park Blocks.

Tickets are $9 for general admission; $8 for Portland Art Museum (PAM) members, students, and seniors; and $6 for Friends of the Film Center.

Tickets may be purchased at the Box Office, which opens 30 minutes before any show. Tickets may also be purchased on-line, through the Northwest Film Center website. Scroll to The Chase entry on the schedule and click the “Buy Tickets” button. A fee of $1 will be added to your order.

Jan. 7 (Tues), 1:30 am, Retro Movie channel – Tales of Terror (1962). Peter appeared in the second of the three segments, “The Black Cat”, the serio-comic story of a man who “hated a cat – a black cat”.

Once filming ended on Arsenic and Old Lace, Capra presented to each actor a photo of the cast standing among the tombstones in the “cemetery” set. Jan. 14 (Tues), 5 pm, TCM – Mad Love (1954). Peter Lorre’s first American movie was not with Columbia Studios, with whom he had a contract, but with MGM in this horror tale about a famed Parisian surgeon (Lorre) whose love for a famous theater actress drives him to a daring experiment – to replace her husband’s damaged hands with the hands of an executed knife-thrower.

February brings Turner Classic Movies’ annual “31 Days of Oscar”, running to the beginning of March. Although Peter Lorre never won an Oscar, many of his movies are on the lists of many of the categories, including winners and nominations.

Feb. 6 (Thurs), 9:30 am, TCM – The Constant Nymph (1944). The category is "Best Actress Nominees", and Joan Fontaine was nominated for her role as Tess Sanger. Peter plays Fritz Bercovy, who loves and marries Tess’ sister Toni (Brenda Marshall).

Feb. 8 (Sat), 10:30 am, TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). The category is "Best Picture Nominees".

Feb. 11 (Tues), 8 pm, TCM – Around the World in 80 Days (1956). The category is "1956 Best Adapted Screenplay Nominees".

Feb. 27 (Thurs), 2:30 am, Antenna TV channel – Alfred Hitchcock Presents, "Man From the South" (March 13, 1960). The classic tale of an unusual bet made on a cigarette lighter lighting 10 times in succession.

Feb. 28 (Fri), 8 pm, TCM – Casablanca (1942). The category is "1943 Best Actor Nominees". Humphrey Bogart was nominated Best Actor for the part of Rick Blaine, an ex-patriot American running a saloon in Casablanca. It was also Bogart’s third film working with Peter Lorre, in the small but pivotal role of Ugarte, who sells exit visas to refugees – many of them Rick’s customers – trying to escape the North African town for America.



March, 2014

Mary Astor is the "Star of the Month" on Turner Classic Movies in March. The Maltese Falcon, the only movie Peter Lorre made with her, is among several Lorre movies on TCM this month.

Mar. 4 (Tues), 10 am, THIS channel – Muscle Beach Party (1964). Peter's one and only appearance in the popular Beach Party series of movies at American International Pictures of the 1960s was playing in movie theaters the day his death was reported in the press.

Mar. 8 (Sat), 1:45 pm, TCM – Around the World in 80 Days (1956).

Mar. 12 (Wed), 8 pm, TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). The TCM spotlight shines on Mary Astor in the only movie she made with Peter Lorre – a classic tale of greed and murder and a fabulous gold-and-jewel statuette.

Mar. 14 (Fri), 10:45 am, TCM – Beat the Devil (1953).

Mar. 25 (Tues), 9:30 pm, TCM – The Cross of Lorraine (1943).
