Canadian Noir Fest Includes Lorre Films

As part of its film noir series, the Dalhousie Art Gallery, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will include two Peter Lorre films – Stranger on the Third Floor (1940) and The Maltese Falcon (1941).

Stranger on the Third Floor will be shown on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015. The movie Detour (1945) will follow.

The Maltese Falcon (1941) will be shown the following Wednesday on Jan. 28, 2015.

Both Lorre movies will begin at 8 pm.

Admission is free for everyone.

The noir series “Long Shadows at Dawn: The Art of Film Noir” will run every Wednesday night at 8 pm from Jan. 21 to June 3. Ron Foley MacDonald will curate the series. The full schedule is available on the Dal website.

Peter Lorre Onscreen in Ann Arbor, Michigan

The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will begin its film noir series with The Maltese Falcon (1941) on Monday, Jan. 12, 2015.

The film begins at 7 pm. The theater’s Barton Organ, installed when the Michigan Theater opened in 1928 and originally accompanied silent movies, will be played before the movie.

Admission is $10 for general admission, $7.50 for Michigan Theater members, and $8 for children under 12, U.S. veterans, seniors age 55 and older, and students with valid ID. Tickets go on sale at the box office 30 minutes before screening time.

The film noir series will run every Monday night from Jan. 12 to April 27, 2015. The full schedule is available on the cinema’s website. The series is sponsored by Money Source Financial Services, with special support from Nicola’s Books.

Freelancing at Warner Bros., Peter teamed with Sydney Greenstreet for the first time in The Maltese Falcon and went on to make an additional eight movies with his heavyweight co-star until Peter left the studio in 1946.

Happy New Year, from Peter Lorre! January 2015 begins another year of Lorre movies on television and Turner Classic Movies.

January, 2015
January bring some Lorre films shown frequently on the Turner Classic Movies channel – and some shown not so frequently.

Jan. 2 (Fri), 3:40 am, Retro Movie channel – The Patsy (1964).

Jan. 3 (Sat), 6:30 am, Turner Classic Movies channel – Hollywood Canteen (1944). The brief scene with Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, playing themselves in their 7th movie together, is considered a highlight in this musical-comedy about a G.I. on leave visiting the Hollywood Canteen and falling in love with his favorite actress Joan Leslie.

Jan. 3 (Sat), 6:15 pm, Retro Movie channel – The Patsy (1964).

Jan. 6 (Tues), 9:15 am and 4:30 pm, Retro Movie channel – The Patsy (1964).

Jan. 7 (Wed), 10:45 pm, TCM – Crime and Punishment (1935). TCM presents an evening of movies based on novels by the Russian writer Feodor Dostoyevsky, including Peter’s version of Crime and Punishment.

Jan. 11 (Sun), 12 noon, TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941).

Jan. 26 (Mon), 6 am, TCM – Silk Stockings (1957). “Let’s Go to Paris!” is the daytime theme on TCM, featuring a number of movies set in Paris, including the Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse musical-comedy – which gave Peter a chance to sing and dance along with Astaire.



February, 2015
February brings TCM’s annual “31 Days of Oscar”, running from Feb. 1 to Mar. 2, 2015. Included will be several Oscar-winning Lorre movies.

Feb. 1 (Sun), 5 pm, TCM – Around the World in 80 Days (1956). "Adventure" is today's theme, including this Best Picture Oscar winner from 1956 about the Victorian gentleman (David Niven) who bets his club friends he can travel around the world in 80 days. Along the way, he – or his valet (Cantinflas) – meet many famous actors in cameo parts, among them Peter Lorre as a Japanese steward.

Feb. 8 (Sun), 10 pm, TCM – Casablanca (1942). Tonight's theme is Best Picture Oscar winners of 1942 to 1944, including Casablanca, Best Picture of 1943. The movie's official release date is January, 1943.

Feb. 15 (Sun), 4:15 pm, TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). Today's theme is "Film Noir", including The Maltese Falcon, with no Oscars, but plenty of nominations, including a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sydney Greenstreet, making his screen debut – and his first movie with Peter Lorre, with whom he went on to appear in eight more movies, all at Warner Bros.



March, 2015
In March, Peter Lorre fans will have an opportunity to catch a couple of Lorre films not shown often on TCM.

Mar. 7 (Sat), 10 pm, MeTV – Invisible Agent (1942). Ghoulish horror movie host Svengoolie presents Peter Lorre's installment in the Invisible Man series.

Mar. 8 (Sun), 3 am, Antenna TV – The Jack Benny Program (CBS, Jan. 22, 1963). Peter Lorre is Jack's guest on this comedy-variety program.

Mar. 16 (Mon), 11:15 pm, TCM – They Met in Bombay (1941). TCM evening host Robert Osborne selects five movies from the TCM vault tonight, among them this Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell MGM comedy adventure, with Peter Lorre as Capt. Chang, who sees a monetary opportunity in taking the two leads aboard his tramp steamer bound for Hong Kong.

Mar. 24 (Tues), 12:15 pm, TCM – Silk Stockings (1957). The daytime theme "Cole Porter" includes this Fred Astaire musical from MGM – which also gave Peter a chance to sing and dance.

Mar. 29 (Sun), 10 pm, TCM – Hotel Berlin (1945). The evening theme "Based on Vicki Baum", includes this all-star tale of a grand hotel in Berlin in the final days of World War II.
