Cemetery Summer Movies Includes Lorre
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, located in Los Angeles, California, will host a showing of Casablanca (1942) as part of the annual Cinespia summer film series.
The cemetery gates open at 7:15 pm. Casablanca begins at 9 pm.
Films are shown on Fairbanks Lawn, an open grassy field located inside the cemetery.
Spread a small tarp on the ground in case of dampness as the sun goes down, and bring blankets and pillows. Acceptable chair height in the “chair zone” is 6 inches from the ground to the seat, and 21 inches from the seat to the top of the chair. Chairs with a seat that rests on the ground with a low back are also allowed.
Food and refreshments are available at the event. Picnic baskets, with wine or beer, are also allowed.
Tickets may be purchased online through the Cinespia website. General admission, parking not included, is $29.99 – $25 for the ticket and $4.99 for fees.
Parking must be purchased separately. Three parking areas are available. Parking on-site at Hollywood Forever is $37.94 – $32 plus $5.94 for fees. Parking at the Lemon Grove parking lot is $31.02 – $26 plus $5.02 for fees. Parking at the Hollywood Production Center is $24.11 – $20 plus $4.11 for fees. More information about parking is available on the Cinespia website.
The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, in Los Angeles, California.
In the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre, Stephen D. Youngkin discusses the making of Casablanca through interviews with actors and behind-the-scenes crew who worked on the picture. The pivotal role of Ugarte, who holds two valuable exit visas he plans to sell to escaping freedom-fighter Victor Laszlo and his lady Ilsa Lund, was a part to which Peter Lorre attached little importance. He said he made more money playing roulette on the casino set than he did working before the cameras.
On March 25, 1964, Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery became the actor’s final resting place when he was laid to rest in the Abbey of the Psalms, Corridor C in the Alcove of Reverence. Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery later became known as Hollywood Forever.
The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre is available online and in brick-and-mortar bookshops everywhere. More information about purchasing The Lost One is available on the book’s official website.

Der Verlorene Comes to Blu-Ray
On June 23, 2025, Peter Lorre’s only directorial effort – the German film Der Verlorene (The Lost One, 1951) – will be released to a limited edition Blu-ray box-set with special features, including audio commentary by Lorre biographer Stephen D. Youngkin and film noir expert Alan K. Rode.
Radiance Films, a boutique company based in the United Kingdom, will release Der Verlorene in the box-set World Noir Vol. 3, along with two other European noir films – Not Guilty (Non Coupable, France, 1947) and Girl With Hyacinths (Flicka Och Hyacinter, Sweden, 1950).
The Region-free Blu-ray box-set will be available through the Radiance Films website, as well as the website for Diabolik DVD, an online merchant specializing in “demented discs from the world over”.
Extras for Der Verlorene include –
- High-definition digital transfer of the movie, with English subtitles
- Audio commentary by Stephen D. Youngkin and Alan K. Rode
- Interview with programmer and historian Margaret Deriaz on post-war German cinema
- Trailer for Der Verlorene
- Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork
Order the Blu-ray from Diabolik DVD – price in American dollars.
The troubled history of the making of Der Verlorene is recounted in the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (2005). In Chapter 8, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, Stephen Youngkin devotes a full chapter to the only movie Peter Lorre directed, co-produced, and co-wrote, interviewing actors and crew before and behind the cameras.
Disappointed in the movie’s reception in 1951, Peter Lorre considered the experience a closed chapter in his life, as he returned to the United States to resume his career in American movies, television, and radio programs. No doubt he would be very pleased at the attention Der Verlorene has received since his passing in 1964 – especially this Blu-ray disc with special features.

Time to Vote in the Annual Rondo Awards!
It doesn’t look like much – a small gray bust of a 1940s horror-film actor – but to those lucky enough to win one, it’s as precious as any other award statuette.
It’s the Rondo – a yearly award where the voters are ordinary fans of science-fiction, horror, and fantasy, and the categories include Movies, TV, Blu-Rays, Restorations and Upgrades, DVD Extras, Documentaries, Articles, Books, Magazines, Magazine Covers, Websites, Blogs, Fan Events, and more.
The statuettes are modeled on and named after 1940s actor Rondo Hatton, whose facial disfigurement by the disease Acromegaly led to a career in Hollywood horror films.
Now in its 23rd year, the Rondos will wrap up at midnight on Sunday, April 20, 2025, Eastern Standard Time.
In 2006, Stephen D. Youngkin won the Best Book of 2005 Rondo for The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (University Press of Kentucky).
This year, there are a few Lorre items on the ballot for the Best of 2024 –
#4 – Best Blu-Ray Collection – Among the nominees are two collections with Peter Lorre films.
Columbia Horror, from Indicator, includes Island of Doomed Men (1940). This is a Region B/2 box-set, packed with extras, such as audio commentary on Island of Doomed Men, as well as the other films in the set, and a documentary on Peter Lorre.
Order the Blu-Ray here from Amazon – United Kingdom.
Thrillers From the Vault, from Mill Creek Entertainment, includes The Boogie Man Will Get You (1942). This is a Region 1 Blu-Ray box-set, with some extras, including audio commentary on The Boogie Man Will Get You.
Order the Blu-Ray here from Amazon – United States.
#6 – Best DVD Extras – Among the nominees is “Darkness of the Morbid Brain”, a documentary on Peter Lorre by Jonathan Rigby. This documentary is available as an extra feature on the Columbia Horror Blu-ray box-set.
#17 – Best Cover – Among the nominees is the cover for Monster Bash #55, a portrait of Peter Lorre as Dr. Gogol by Micah Carey. This issue of Monster Bash was released December 4, 2024.
The official ballot is available on the Rondo Awards website.
Voting is done by eMail. To vote, simply cut and paste the ballot into an eMail, mark your choices, include your name, and send the eMail to David Colton at –
taraco@aol.com
Ballots will be accepted until midnight on Sunday, April 20, 2025, Eastern Standard Time.
More information on the Rondos, including the ballot and instructions, the history of the award, and past winners, may be found on the Rondo website.
Winners will be announced on the Rondo website as well as the Classic Horror Film Board, in the folder “Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards”.
