Lorre Comedy at Canadian Cinema

Lorre fans in the area Toronto, Canada, can enjoy Peter on the big screen when the Paradise Theatre partners with the Toronto Film Society for a showing of Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

The program begins at 2:30 pm, and the Toronto Film Society promises at least one “surprise short film”.

Ticket prices are $15 general admission, and $12.50 for students and seniors with valid ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the day of the screening. Tickets may also be purchased online through Eventbrite. Nominal booking fees and HST will be added to each ticket purchased online.

Opening in 1910, the historic Paradise Theatre is located at 1006 Bloor Street, at the corner of Bloor Street and Westmoreland Avenue, in Toronto, Ontario, in Canada.

Green P parking (Carpark 84) is available directly behind the cinema, just north of Bloor Street West.

This month, TCM salutes Frank Borzage, who directed Peter Lorre in the MGM movie Strange Cargo in 1940. The Movies! Network presents an animated Peter.

May 5 (Sun), 12:45 pm, Movies! Network – Hollywood Steps Out (1941). In this cartoon from Warner Bros, Peter joins other caricatured actors in a night out at Hollywood's top nightspot.

May 9 (Thurs), 6 am, Movies! Network – Racketeer Rabbit (1946). In this Warner Bros cartoon, Bugs Bunny encounters an animated Peter Lorre and Edward G. Robinson as gangsters on the lam from the police.

May 16 (Thurs), 10:15 am, Turner Classic Movies – The Maltese Falcon (1941). TCM turns the daytime spotlight on Film Noir, including Peter's first film at the Warner Bros studio, his first movie with Humphrey Bogart, and his first movie with Sydney Greenstreet. He would go on to have a long association with both actors.

May 16 (Thurs), 4:15 am, Turner Classic Movies – Strange Cargo (1940). The primetime theme is "Director Frank Borzage", with an evening of movies directed by Borzage, including the only movie he made with Peter Lorre.

SiriusXM Celebrates Lorre Co-Star Birthday

Lorre fans will have an opportunity to catch one of Peter’s Mystery in the Air episodes on the Radio Classics channel during the week of April 22, 2024, when host Greg Bell celebrates the birthday of Gloria Ann Simpson with a two-hour block of her radio shows.

The programs include Mystery in the Air, “Crime and Punishment”, broadcast September 25, 1947; Rocky Fortune, “Boarding House Doublecross”, broadcast March 30, 1954; The Falcon, “The Case of the Vanishing Varmint”, broadcast July 11, 1951; and Boston Blackie, “The Twin Midnight Murders”, broadcast February 25, 1948.

Mystery in the Air was the 1947 summer replacement series for The Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Show and originally aired over NBC for 13 weeks, beginning July 3, 1947, with “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and ending on September 25 with “Crime and Punishment”.

The “Crime and Punishment” episode was adapted from Peter Lorre’s 1935 movie for Columbia. In the episode, Gloria Ann Simpson plays the pawnbroker, whom Lorre’s character Roderick Raskolnikov murders with a poker – resulting in a cat-and-mouse game between Raskolnikov and the police inspector Porfiry, played by series regular Louis Van Rooten.

Disney Classic in Maryland Includes Lorre

Advertised in 1954 as “The Mightiest Motion Picture of Them All”, the Walt Disney classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), starring Peter Lorre, Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Paul Lukas, celebrates its 70th anniversary at the American Film Institute in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The undersea adventure will be shown on the AFI’s big screen on these dates and times ~

  • Sunday, April 14 – 11:20 am
  • Tuesday, April 16 – 4:45 pm
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is presented as part of the “Fabulous ‘50s” series, which began Friday, February 2, and will run until Thursday, May 2, 2024. More information about the series is available on the AFI website.

Tickets are $13 general admission; $11 for seniors age 65 and older, students and military with valid ID; $11 for AFI Members at 2-star level and higher; and $8 for children age 12 and under. SiriusXM Celebrates Lorre Co-Star Birthday


The week of April 8, 2024, Radio Classics host Greg Bell salutes the birthday of actor Harry Morgan, Peter Lorre’s co-host on Mystery in the Air.

The old-time radio shows channel will present a 2-hour block of programs featuring Harry Morgan, including Mystery in the Air, “The Horla” (August 21, 1947); Mystery in the Air, “The Queen of Spades” (September 11, 1947); This is Your FBI, “The Floating Stickup” (December 8, 1950), and Tales of the Texas Rangers, “Conspiracy” (April 15, 1951).

Harry Morgan’s birthday block will air these dates and times ~

Born April 10, 1915, actor Harry Morgan appeared as “The Voice of Mystery” on Peter Lorre’s radio series Mystery in the Air, a replacement series for The Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Show in the summer of 1947.

Mystery in the Air presented tales of suspense “culled from the four corners of world literature”, adapted from such famous tales as Alexander Pushkin’s “The Queen of Spades” and Guy de Maupassant’s “The Horla”, as well as original radio dramas.

Morgan hosted all 13 episodes, beginning with “The Tell-Tale Heart” on July 3 and continuing to the final program on September 25, 1947 – “Crime and Punishment”, adapted from Peter’s 1935 Columbia Studios film.

Lorre Adventure Classic at Chicago Film Society

Lorre fans in Chicago, Illinois, can journey deep underwater with Peter and his co-stars Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Paul Lukas when the Chicago Film Society presents the Walt Disney classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

The 35mm print will be shown at 5 pm.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be shown in the Gene Siskel Film Center as part of the series Chicago Film Society: Technicolor Weekend, highlighting movies film in the technicolor process up to 1955.

Tickets are $13 for general admission; $8 for students with valid ID, seniors over 65, and youth under 18. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the box office or online through the Film Center website. Ticket sales end 15 minutes after the movie’s listed start time. Late entry is not permitted. The Gene Siskel Film Center is located at 164 N. State Street in the heart of the theater district in Chicago, Illinois. The venue is well-served by public transportation.

Lorre Onscreen in Phoenixville

The historic Colonial Theatre, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, presents its annual showing of Casablanca (1942) on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

Sponsored by the Theatre Organ Society of the Delaware Valley (TOSDV), the program begins at 1 pm in the “1903” theater with a selection of classic Hollywood music played on the cinema’s Wurlitzer organ.

Casablanca begins at 1:30 pm with a video introduction by a Turner Classic Movies channel host and the Warner Bros. cartoon Carrotblanca (1995), with Tweety Bird doing an impression of Peter Lorre as Ugarte.

Admission is $12 for adults; seniors age 62 and over; students; and military members with ID; and $8 for children and Colonial Theatre members. Tickets may be purchased at the theater’s box-office, which opens at least an hour before the first program of the day. Tickets may also be purchased through the Colonial’s website.

The Colonial Theatre is located at 227 Bridge Street in the heart of the historic business center in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.

Free 2-hour parking is available on the streets near the Colonial Theatre. The 2-hour limit is strictly enforced. Metered parking is available in nearby lots. Lorre Hitchcock Film Onscreen in Oregon

As the finale of their “BRITchcock in the 30s” series of Saturday matinees, Cinema 21, located in Portland, Oregon, will present Peter Lorre’s first English-Speaking movie The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

The film begins at 11 am.

Admission is $9 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased at the cinema’s box-office. Tickets may also be purchased through the Cinema 21 website. Click on the button marked “11 am” at the bottom of the Man Who Knew Too Much page. A purchase window will open. A nominal booking fee will be added to each ticket purchased online.
