Boutique Drive-In Shows Lorre Classic

In 2009, a guy from Austin, Texas, started buying old drive-in theater speakers on eBay and restoring them – then opened the first mini urban drive-in, the Blue Starlite. Located in the Mueller Tower District of Austin, this boutique drive-in with limited space for cars runs classic movies, as well as newer releases.

Casablanca (1942) will be shown on Sunday, May 14, and Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Showtimes for Casablanca are approximately 8:40 pm each night.

Tickets may be purchased online through the Blue Starlite website. Click the “Buy Tickets” button or “Buy Drive-In Tickets” link on the home page and scroll to Casablanca. Ticket prices begin at $25 to $35

Snacks are also available for purchase at the drive-in.

The Blue Starlite drive-in is located at 2103 E.M. Franklin Avenue, in the Mueller Tower District of Austin, Texas.

Lorre Movies on TV in May

As spring becomes summer, Peter's fans can look forward to several Lorre movies on the Turner Classic Movies channel, as well as other channels, including Talking Pictures TV.

American times shown are Eastern Standard.

Peter Lorre’s page on the TV Guide Channel website lists the Lorre films scheduled on various television channels over a 2-week period.


May, 2023

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, TCM salutes the work of cinematographer James Wong Howe, who worked on a couple Lorre movies.

May 4 (Thurs), 4 am, Movies! Network – The Chase (1946).

May 6 (Sat), 11:30 am, Fox Movie Channel – Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961).

May 9 (Tues), 2:15 pm, TCM – Passage to Marseille (1944). TCM turns the spotlight on cinematographer James Wong Howe, with a day of movies he worked on, including a Lorre double-feature, beginning with this story of five Frenchmen (Peter Lorre, Humphrey Bogart, Philip Dorn, George Tobias, Helmut Dantine) who escape from the French penal colony in Guiana, intending to join the Free French and fight for war-torn France.

May 9 (Tues), 4:15 pm, TCM – Confidential Agent (1944). The Lorre double feature of movies photographed by James Wong Howe continues with this story of a Spanish agent (Charles Boyer) who travels to London to make a deal for coal and finds danger and double-crossing, including his own contacts (Peter Lorre, Katina Paxinou).

May 10 (Wed), 6 am, TCM – Silk Stockings (1957). The daytime theme is a birthday tribute to Fred Astaire, including this musical set in Paris and featuring a singing and dancing Peter Lorre.

May 19 (Fri), 1:10 pm, Fox Movie channel – Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961).

May 19 (Fri), 5:45 pm, TCM – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). TCM takes a look at "Gallows Humor", including the dark comedy about the two spinster sisters who help lonely old men into the next world with their own special elderberry wine.

May 20 (Sat), 8 pm, TCM – Casablanca (1942). Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks steps in as guest programmer, joining regular TCM host Ben Mankiewicz, with two classic Warner Bros. movies – Casablanca (1942) and Jezebel (1938).

May 27 (Sat), 12 noon, TCM – Hollywood Canteen (1944). TCM host Dave Karger returns to his "Musical Matinee" program with with a showing of this all-star extravaganza film set in the famed Hollywood Canteen for soldiers during World War II.

May 31 (Wed), 2:15 am, Movies! Network – Beat the Devil (1954). Peter Lorre made his final film appearance with his old friend Humphrey Bogart in this tale of fortune hunters in search of uranium in Africa.


Sneak Peek at June, 2023

Eddie Muller welcomes Lorre and Greenstreet to Noir Alley.

June 10 (Sat), 12:30 am, TCM – The Verdict (1946). The "Czar of Noir" Eddie Muller presents this Victorian mystery in which neighbors and best friends (Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet) team up to solve a murder committed in a locked room.
