George Eastman Museum Screens Lorre Classic

On Thursday, June 25, 2026, the George Eastman Museum, located in Rochester, New York, will show The Face Behind the Mask (1941) as part of their series “Lose Yourself”, curated by students from The L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation.

The film will begin at 7:30 pm in the Dryden Theatre. Selznick student Karina Longworth will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion.

Admission is $13 for adults, $9 for adult members of the Eastman Museum, and $5 for students with I.D. Tickets may be purchased at the box office, as well as online through the venue’s website.

The Face Behind the Mask closes the “Lose Yourself” film series, which ran throughout May and June, 2026. The series examined what it means for characters to lose themselves through lies, pleasures, work, or in the case of Peter Lorre’s character Janos Szabo, a terrible injury to his face in a tenement fire – an injury that requires Janos to wear a rubber mask made from his passport photo.

In the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (2005), Stephen D. Youngkin discusses the making of The Face Behind the Mask through interviews with director Robert Florey. Disliking prosthetics and elaborate make-up, Peter Lorre simulated a rubber mask by putting adhesive tape on each side of his face and applying dead-white make-up.

George Eastman House Screens Disney Classic

On Saturday, June 18, 2022, the George Eastman House will screen in 35mm the Walt Disney classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), co-starring Peter Lorre with Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Paul Lukas.

The program begins at 7:30 pm in the Dryden Theatre.

Admission is $10 for adults; $7 for Museum members; and $5 for children, as well as students with ID. Admission is free for active-duty military and their families, and SNAP and EBT card-holders and their families. Tickets may be purchased at the theater box-office, which opens 45 minutes before a given screening.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at the George Eastman House

As part of their salute to the birth of the CinemaScope process 60 years ago, the Dryden Theatre presents a series of landmark CinemaScope movies. On Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, the program continues with a showing in 35mm of the Walt Disney Productions film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), co-starring Peter Lorre with James Mason, Kirk Douglas and Paul Lukas.

In conjunction with the CinemaScope movie program, the George Eastman House presents an exhibit on the groundbreaking process – “Bigger Than Life: CinemaScope at 60”, which will run from Nov. 2, 2013, until Jan. 12, 2014.

The exhibit includes original artifacts from the museum’s collection, as well as multimedia and interactive displays, enabling visitors to explore the history, technology, and promotion of CinemaScope.

The exhibit is located in the Brackett Clark Annex.
