Maryland Nostalgia Event Includes Lorre

The annual Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, held in Hunt Valley, Maryland, from September 15 to 17, 2022, features many celebrities of film and television, classic movies and TV episodes – and this year, Der Verlorene (The Lost One, 1951), the only movie directed, co-written, and co-produced by Peter Lorre.

The Lost One will be shown on Thursday, September 15, at 6 pm, and on Saturday, September 17, at 11 am. All movies and TV episodes will be shown in the Movie Room.

Contact the hotel directly and mention the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention to get the discounted rate. Parking at the hotel is free.

Now in its 17th year, the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (MANC) will run from Thursday, September 15, to Saturday, September 17, 2022. The event includes a vendor room, celebrities signing autographs and sitting on Q&A panels, and programs on various entertainment topics, in addition to the movie, cartoons, and television screenings. The Seminar schedule and the Movie Room schedule are available on the MANC website.

In the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (2005), Stephen D. Youngkin devotes a full chapter, Chapter 8, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", to the troubled making of Der Verlorene, including interviews with actors and crew who worked before and behind the cameras with Peter. Translating the title as The Lost One, Peter co-wrote and co-produced the movie, as well as directing himself in the lead role.

Unfortunately, Der Verlorene was a failure in Germany. Peter considered the experience a closed chapter in his life and returned to the United States, where he resumed his career in American movies and radio, as well as the new industry of television.

Since 1983, however, Der Verlorene has attracted more interest with numerous showings in a variety of venues. No doubt Peter Lorre would be very pleased at the attention his only directorial effort has received since his passing in 1964.
