Lorre Movies in August

As summer rolls on, August brings the annual "Summer Under the Stars" film festival on the Turner Classic Movies channel, plus Lorre movies on the Talking Pictures TV channel in England, and Movies! Network in the United States.

Every August, the Turner Classic Movies channel presents "Summer Under the Stars", with each day devoted to a particular actor or actress. Although Peter Lorre does not get a "Day" this year, as he has in years past, several of his co-stars are highlighted – Claude Rains, Clark Gable, James Gleason, Hedy Lamarr, and Gina Lollobrigida.

Aug 2 (Sat), 1 pm, Movies! Network – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).

Aug 4 (Mon), 10:20 am, Movies! Network – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).

Aug 5 (Tues), 1:30 pm, TCM – Passage to Marseille (1944). Claude Rains is the "Star of the Day" and among the movies are two films he made with Peter Lorre. In this World War II drama, five convicts (Peter Lorre, Humphrey Bogart, George Tobias, Helmut Dantine, Philip Dorn) escape from the penal colony in French Guiana and are picked up by a tramp steamer bound for Marseille.

Aug 5 (Tues), 10 pm, TCM – Casablanca (1942). Claude Rains is the "Star of the Day" and the second Lorre film is one of his most famous. This wartime classic features Peter in the pivotal role of Ugarte, the blackmarket dealer in exit visas.

Aug 9 (Sat), 6:40 am, Talking Pictures TV – Beat the Devil (1954).

Aug 10 (Sun), 4 pm, TCM – They Met in Bombay (1941). Clark Gable is the "Star of the Day" and among the movies is the second of two films he made with Peter Lorre. Jewel thieves Gable and Rosalind Russell escape from the police in Bombay, India, by boarding Peter Lorre's freighter bound for Hong Kong.

Aug 13 (Wed), 7 am, Antenna TV – The Jack Benny Program (Jan 22, 1963).

Aug 14 (Thurs), 6 am, Movies! Network – The Chase (1946).

Aug 14 (Thurs), 9:35 pm, BBC 4 – Casablanca (1942).

Aug 18 (Mon), 11:45 pm, TCM – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). Character actor James Gleason is the "Star of the Day" and among the movies is the only film he made with Peter Lorre. Note – In Canada, the musical Babes on Broadway (1941) will be shown instead of Arsenic and Old Lace.

Aug 19 (Tues), 4 pm, TCM – The Conspirators (1944). Hedy Lamarr is the "Star of the Day" and among the movies is the only American film she made with Peter Lorre, a World War II spy drama set in Lisbon, Portugal.

Aug 20 (Wed), 1:25 pm, Movies! Network – Beat the Devil (1954).

Aug 22 (Fri), 10:30 am, Movies! Network – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).

Aug 22 (Fri), 11:48 am, Action MAX – Casablanca (1942). The Action MAX channel in the Cinemax family of pay movie channels airs the World War II classic romance film, starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Begman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet, among many others.

Aug 23 (Sat), 11:45 am, TCM – Beat the Devil (1954). Gina Lollobrigida is the "Star of the Day" and among the movies is the only film she made with Peter Lorre, a caper comedy set in Italy, and the final movie Peter made with his old friend Humphrey Bogart TCM will be showing the restored print, with the original opening and several additional minutes.

Sneak Peek at September, 2025

September brings a number of Peter Lorre movies on TCM, including the only movie he made with Lauren Bacall, whose birthday is celebrated with a morning and afternoon of her movies.

Sept 2 (Tues), TCM – Mad Love (1935). The daytime theme is "Mad Obsession", including Peter Lorre's first American movie, the MGM classic Mad Love. Note: In Canada, another film will be shown instead of Mad Love.

Sept 4 (Thurs), TCM – The Beast with Five Fingers (1946). The late night theme is "Beasts", including Peter Lorre's final movie at the Warner Bros studio.

Sept 8 (Mon), TCM – The Cross of Lorraine (1943). The daytime theme is "WWII in Europe", including Peter Lorre's turn as a vicious Sergeant in a German prisoner of war camp.

Sept 16 (Tues), TCM – Confidential Agent (1945). TCM celebrates the birthday of Lauren Bacall with a morning and afternoon of her movies, including the only film she made with Peter Lorre.

Lorre movies kick off the month on Day One!

July 1 (Tues), 10:15 am, TCM – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). The Turner Classic Movies channel celebrates Canada Day with a salute to Hollywood actors originally from Canada, including Raymond Massey in the first movie he made with Peter Lorre – and as a duo. Raymond Massey plays the homical brother Jonathan, nephew to sweet, charming little old ladies (Josephine Hull and Jean Adair). Peter Lorre plays Jonathan's personal plastic surgeon. Together. they add to the mayhem by their sudden appearance and a body of their own, tucked away in the rumble seat of their car. Note – In Canada, Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940) will be shown instead.

July 1 (Tues), 8 pm, Movies! Network – Around the World in 80 Days (1956).

July 2 (Wed), 1:15 pm, Movies! Network – The Maltese Falcon (1951). A day of Bogart movies on the Movies! Network channel includes this classic mystery.

July 4 (Fri), 3 pm, Rewind – Beat the Devil (1954). The British television channel airs the final movie Peter Lorre made with Humphrey Bogart.

Aug 18 (Mon), TCM – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). James Gleason is the Star today, and the line-up includes the only film Gleason made with Peter Lorre.

Aug 19 (Tues), TCM – The Conspirators (1944). Hedy Lamarr is the Star of the day, and the line-up includes the only Hollywood movie she made with Peter Lorre, a war-time spy drama set in Lisbon.

Aug 23 (Sat), TCM – Beat the Devil (1954). Gina Lollobrigida is the Star of the day, and the line-up includes the only movie she made with Peter Lorre, a Bogart comedy set in Africa.
