MGM Anniversary Includes Lorre

From mid-July to mid-September, 2024, the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, located in Silver Spring, Maryland, celebrates the 100th anniversary of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer with a special series of MGM movies – including two Peter Lorre films.

In July, Mad Love (1935) will be shown on these days and times ~

• Saturday, July 20 – 9:20 pm
• Sunday, July 21 – 12:55 pm

And in August, Silk Stockings (1957) will be shown on these days and times ~

• Sunday, August 18 – 4:35 pm
• Monday, August 19 – 4:35 pm
• Wednesday, August 21 – 4:20 pm

Tickets are $13 for adults; $11 for AFI members (2 star and higher) and seniors age 65 and older; $8 for children age 12 and under; $10 for matinee showings Saturdays and Sundays before noon, and weekdays before 5 pm.

Tickets may be purchased at the AFI Silver box-office. Tickets may also be purchased online through the cinema’s website. A nominal service fee will be added to each ticket purchased online.

The AFI Silver Theatre is located at 8633 Colesville Road, at the intersection of Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue, in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Parking is available in several public parking decks close to the theater. Most convenient is the Wayne Avenue garage, located at 921 Wayne Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland. Parking at the Wayne Avenue garage is free all day on Sundays.

The celebration of MGM’s centennial began on Friday, July 12, 2024, and will run until Thursday, September 19, 2024. The list of movies in the series is available on the AFI Silver website.

TCM Film Fest 2018 Includes Lorre

Turner Classic Movies has announced the full schedule for their annual Classic Film Festival, to be held in Hollywood from Thursday, April 26 to Sunday, April 29, 2018 – and Lorre fans attending the event will be treated to showings of Silk Stockings (1957) and The Raven (1963), as well as many special guests.

The Raven – Saturday, April 28 – 9:30 pm.

Silk Stockings – Sunday, April 29 – 3:30 pm.

Both films will be shown at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres Multiplex, located at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, in Hollywood, California. Built in 2001, the Chinese Multiplex is next door to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, home of the handprints and shoeprints of the famous in the theater’s courtyard.

This year’s festival theme is "Powerful Words: The Page On Screen".

The Raven, loosely based on the poem by Poe, will be shown as part of the "Poet's Corner". Sara Karloff, daughter of Boris Karloff, who co-starred with Peter in several movies, including The Raven, will be the special guest.

Silk Stockings is shown as one of the "Essentials". Special guest is Dr. Vanessa Ament, who will be the teacher/facilitator for TCM’s free online course on Hollywood movie musicals this coming summer.

Festival passes are still available in these three categories – Palace, Classic, Essential, and Spotlight – and may be purchased through the festival website.

Individual tickets may also be purchased for $20 for most screenings and events. Students with valid Student ID will receive a 50% discount off all individual tickets.

Venues for the various events include the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX (formerly known as Grauman’s Chinese), The Egyptian Theater, and the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres multiplex – all within an easy walking distance along Hollywood Boulevard.

Lorre Sings and Dances at the Prytania

Lorre fans in the New Orleans area are in for a special treat on Sunday, Jan. 15 and Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017 – a showing of the classic MGM musical Silk Stockings (1957) at the historic Prytania Theatre as part of their Classic Movie Series, which continues through January and February.

The movie will begin at 10 am each morning, introduced by Rene J. Brunet, owner of the historic Prytania. Brunet is acknowledged as an expert on film, as well as a New Orleans theater historian.

Ticket prices are $6 for all ages for the matinee screening. Tickets may be purchased at the cinema box office. Tickets may also be purchased online through the Prytania website. Select "Purchase Tickets" from the drop-down menu, and select Silk Stockings. A nominal fee of $1.25 will be charged for online purchases.

The Prytania Theatre is located at 5339 Prytania Street, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre, Stephen D. Youngkin discusses the making of Silk Stockings through interviews with dance choreography Hermes Pan, director Reuben Mamoulian, and actor Joseph Buloff (who played one of Peter’s fellow Russian commissars). Admitting to Pan he was not a dancer, Peter nonetheless came up with suggestions to make his dances funnier, including a kazatski, a demanding Ukranian dance he performs with a butter knife clenched between his teeth.

Lorre Sings, Dances in Palo Alto

Lorre fans in the Palo Alto, California area, can catch a singing and dancing Peter Lorre over the Labor Day weekend when the Stanford Theatre presents the Fred Astaire MGM musical Silk Stockings (1957) on a double bill with Anastasia (1956), September 5 through 8, Saturday through Tuesday.

Silk Stockings will be shown each day at 5:20 pm and 9:25 pm. Anastasia will be shown at 7:30 pm, with a matinee at 3:25 on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for Seniors (65 and older) and Youth (18 and younger). Tickets may be purchased with cash only at the Stanford box office on the day of the show.

The Stanford Theatre is located at 221 University Avenue, in Palo Alto, California.

Take a Class on "Peter Lorre"

From Oct. 6 to Nov. 3, 2009, Lorre fans in Vero Beach, Florida, will be able to study the life and career of the classic film actor.

“The World of Peter Lorre” will be offered through the Education and Film Department at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. Warren Obluck, the museum’s film studies coordinator, will lead the discussions and screen several Lorre movies, including M (1931), The Maltese Falcon (1941), Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), Beat the Devil (1953), and Silk Stockings (1957).

In addition, Think Fast, Mr. Moto (1937) – the first of the eight Mr. Moto detective films Lorre made at 20th Century-Fox in the late 1930s – will be shown in serial style at the beginning of each class session.

The 5-week class will be held in the Leonhardt Auditorium every Tuesday, beginning Oct. 6 and ending Nov. 3. Two sessions are available – afternoons at 1:30 p.m. and evenings at 7 p.m. The cost is $55, $45 for Museum members.

The Vero Beach Museum of Art is located in Riverside Park, at 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, Florida. Free parking is available on campus.

Why a class on Peter Lorre? As instructor Warren Obluck stated in a recent interview with TCPalm, Lorre was “so amazingly talented and so remarkably underused in the United States that audiences never had the opportunity to discover what he was all about.” Through Peter’s movies and a discussion of his personal life, Obluck intends to help students “understand Lorre’s range as an actor.”
