Bogart Fest Includes Lorre Films

Hurricane Irma paid a visit to Key Largo in September 2017, but the annual Humphrey Bogart Film Festival carries on!

This year, the Bogart fest celebrates the 75th anniversary Casablanca (1942) with showings of the classic movie, as well as three of the five movies Peter made with Bogart – Passage to Marseille (1944), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and Beat the Devil (1954) – and special guests Monika Henreid, daughter of Paul Henreid, and Jessica Rains, daughter of Claude Rains, joining Stephen Bogart, son of Humphrey Bogart.

Running from Wednesday, Oct. 18, to Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, the festival includes special events, round-table discussions, a display of Bogart family memorabilia, a Saturday evening dinner, a closing Sunday brunch, and much more.

Stephen Humphrey Bogart, son of Bogie and Lauren Bacall, will host the event, joined by Illeana Douglas, granddaughter of actor Melvyn Douglas. The many Bogart films on the schedule will be screened at the host hotel and the Tavernier Cinemas.

Playa Largo Resort and Spa is the host hotel of the Bogart Film Festival, as well as the primary event venue. In The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre, author Stephen Youngkin chronicles Peter Lorre’s on- and off-screen friendship with Bogart. The two actors first worked together on The Maltese Falcon in the summer of 1941 and went on to make another four movies – three of them at Warner Bros. Their final movie, Beat the Devil (1954), reteamed them with John Huston, their Falcon director.

During his lifetime, Peter had few friends, but he counted Bogie as one of his two closest – the other being Bertolt Brecht, the German playwright with whom Peter worked as a young stage actor in Berlin during the 1920s.

Bogart Festival in Key Largo Includes Lorre

Lorre fans who have never attended the annual Humphrey Bogart Film Festival may want to consider a trip to Key Largo, Florida, this October – Peter’s own Fedora hat will be among the items displayed in the Bogart family memorabilia collection, amongst Bogart’s stopwatch, suit, wedding ring, camera, and keys to his dressing room.

Held from Wednesday, Oct. 12 to Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, the Bogart Fest will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Maltese Falcon (1941) with special discussions, live radio play performances, and showings of the classic hard-boiled detective film. Casablanca (1942) will also be on the festival schedule.

Stephen Humphrey Bogart, son of Bogie and Lauren Bacall, will host the event, joined by Eddie Muller, the “Czar of Noir” and Master of Ceremonies Billy Corben. The many Bogart films on the schedule will be screened in a variety of locations, including the host hotel, movie theaters, and outdoor locations in Key Largo and Tavernier.

• A free one-hour discussion of Bogart and film noir, led by Eddie Muller
• A round-table discussion of The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep (1945), including Stephen Bogart, Eddie Muller, and other special guests
• Showings of The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca
• The Maltese Falcon performed as a live radio play
• Stephen Bogart hosts discussion of the Memorabilia Room

Bogart Festival in Key Largo Includes Two Lorre Films

The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Casablanca (1942) are among the Bogart movies featured at the first annual Bogart Film Festival to be held in Key Largo, Florida, this weekend, May 2 to 5, 2013.

Stephen Humphrey Bogart, son of Bogie and Lauren Bacall, will host the event, which includes several non-Bogart noir films from the 1940s to now. Movies will be screened in a variety of locations, including hotels, theaters, and outdoor locations in Key Largo, Islamorada, and Tavernier.

The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca will be shown at the following dates and locations:

• May 3, Friday, 9 pm – The Maltese Falcon, at the outdoor amphitheater at Founders Park, 87000 Overseas Highway, Islamorada
• May 3, Friday, 9 pm – Casablanca, outside the Murray Nelson Government and Cultural Center, 10200 Overseas Highway, Key Largo
• May 4, Saturday, 9 pm – The Maltese Falcon, outside the Murray Nelson Government and Cultural Center, 10200 Overseas Highway, Key Largo
• May 4, Saturday, 9 pm – Casablanca, at the outdoor amphitheater at Founders Park, 87000 Overseas Highway, Islamorada

Thursday night, May 2, the Festival will open at the Murray Nelson Government and Cultural Center, with a cocktail reception hosted by Stephen Bogart and film historian Leonard Maltin at 7:30 pm and an outdoor screening of Key Largo (1948).

• Discussion of Bogart’s life and career with Stephen Bogart and Leonard Maltin
• The Bogart Ball, hosted by Stephen Bogart and attended by Leonard Maltin, who will give a speech on Bogart’s contribution to film noir
• Tours on-board the restored African Queen

The festival will conclude with the Bogart Brunch on Sunday, May 5, beginning 10 am at Gus’ Grille Restaurant in Key Largo.

Bogart Film Festival Includes 3 Lorre Films

The Cinéma du Parc in Montreal, Canada, presents a Humphrey Bogart film festival during the month of September.

On the schedule of classic Bogart films are three films co-starring Peter Lorre: The Maltese Falcon (1941), Casablanca (1942), and Beat the Devil (1954):

Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre appeared in a total of five movies together. They began with The Maltese Falcon, continued with All Through the Night (1942), Casablanca, and Passage to Marseille (1944) all at Warner Bros., and ended with the independent film Beat the Devil, directed by John Huston, their director on Falcon.

In his book The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre, Stephen D. Youngkin details the many stories about the two actors’ antics and practical jokes both on- and off-set.

Peter counted Bogie as one of his two closest friends – the other being German playwright Bertolt Brecht – and they remained friends to Bogie’s passing in 1957.
