Kentucky Theatre Summer Classics Includes Lorre

The “Summer Classics” film festival at The Kentucky Theatre, located in Lexington, Kentucky, continues with a showing of the Peter Lorre mystery classic The Maltese Falcon (1941) on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

The film will be shown at 1:30 pm and 7:15 pm.

Tickets are $7.75 for all matinee seats; $9.50 for regular evening admission; $7.75 for seniors, students with ID, and children under 12. Kentucky Theatre members may purchase tickets for $7.50 for any showing. Tickets may be purchased at the box office, which opens 30 minutes before each show. Tickets may also be purchased through the cinema’s website. Nominal fees and tax will be added to each ticket purchased online.

The historic Kentucky Theatre is located at 214 East Main Street in Lexington, Kentucky.

Parking is available on the streets near the cinema. The Phoenix Garage, located on Water Street, and the Helix Garage, both offer paid parking before 5 pm, and free parking after 5 pm. More information about parking is available on the cinema’s website.

The “Summer Classics” series offers classic live action and animated movies every Wednesday, beginning May 31 and ending on September 6, 2023. The schedule is available on the cinema’s website.

Historic Warner Cascade Continues Studio Anniversary

On February, 1907, the four Warner brothers – Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack – opened their first cinema in New Castle, Pennsylvania. They called it the Cascade Picture Palace. On April 4, 1923, the brothers officially celebrated their incorporation of the Warner Brothers Studio.

And 100 years later, Lorre fans in the New Castle, Pennsylvania, area can enjoy more of Peter’s classic movies in the historic Cascade – now known as the Warner Cascade Theatre Museum – when the cinema continues its celebration of the Warner Bros studio’s 100th anniversary.

The celebration continues throughout the months of July, August, and September, until Thursday, September 28, 2023. The full schedule is available on the Visit Lawrence County Pennsylvania website.

Each Thursday at 12 noon, a free Warner Bros classic film will be shown in the Cascade Theatre.

Lorre films scheduled are ~ Admission is free for everyone, but seating is limited.

Co-sponsoring the series are the New Castle Public Library and the Lawrence County Historical Society.

The Warner Cascade Theatre is located at 11 South Mill Street in downtown New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Students! Amherst Film Class Includes Lorre!

On Monday, July 17, 2023, the Amherst Cinema, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, local filmmaker and film expert Nina Kleinberg will conduct a seminar on the Peter Lorre classic Casablanca (1942).

Using raw footage, film clips, and production stills, Ms. Kleinberg will discuss the making of Casablanca, with special attention to the work of the director, cameraman, editors, and the cast.

The program begins at 6 pm with the seminar, followed by a showing of Casablanca at 7:30 pm.

Working as a film editor in the 1970s, after graduating film school at the University of Southern California (USC), Ms. Kleinberg has a long-term interest in movies and their history, presenting several programs at Amherst Cinema.

Admission for the event is $25 for the general public, and $20 for Amherst Cinema Members. Tickets may be purchased online through the Amherst Cinema website. A nominal service fee will be added to each ticket purchased online.

The Amherst Cinema is located at 28 Amity Street in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Parking is available in the Bank of America lot during non-banking hours. Cinemagoers may park on 5 pm on Mondays, as well as other days of the week. Summer in July brings a handful of Lorre films on the Turner Classic Movies channel, as well as other channels, including Talking Pictures TV.

American times shown are Eastern Standard.

August brings TCM's annual "Summer Under the Stars" film festival, and this year, the actors co-starring with Peter Lorre include Rhonda Fleming, Ronald Colman, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, and Humphrey Bogart.

Aug 10 (Thurs), 6 am, TCM – The Big Circus (1959). Rhonda Fleming is the star today, including this movie set in a traveling three-ring circus.

Aug 15 (Tues), 8:15 am, TCM – The Story of Mankind (1957). Ronald Colman is the star today, including this movie highlighting the villains and heroes of human history.

Aug 17 (Thurs), 8:15 am, TCM – My Favorite Brunette (1947). Bob Hope is the star today, including this comedy about a baby photographer turned private detective (Hope) and the gang after uranium. Note – In Canada, A Global Affair (1964) will be shown instead.

Aug 19 (Sat), 8:15 am, TCM – Silk Stockings (1957). Fred Astaire is the star today, including this musical comedy with a singing and dancing Peter Lorre.

Aug 27 (Sun), 4 pm, TCM – Passage to Marseille (1944). Humphrey Bogart is the star today, including this World War II drama about convicts escaping from the French penal colony in French Guiana.

Aug 27 (Sun), 10 pm, TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). The day of Humphrey Bogart movies continues with this classic mystery.
