Summer Film Fests Feature Casablanca

Beginning in the month of June, many movie theaters add classic movies to their schedules, and this month, Casablanca (1942) will kick off many of these festivals.

In the pivotal role of Ugarte, provider of exit visas to those desperate to leave Casablanca – and murderer of two German couriers – Peter Lorre gets the action going by leaving with his friend Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) two valuable letters of transit he intends to sell to escaping freedom fighter Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid) and his wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman).

And although limited to only a few scenes, Peter is always a treat to watch in a movie theater, including these ~

Lafayette Library ~ The Lafayette Library, located in Lafayette, California, is the venue for the series “From Europe With Film”, which honors three Jewish directors who immigrated from Europe.

On Wednesday, June 1, 2022, the program begins with a showing of Casablanca, hosted by historian Lynne Thorner and Erik Preminger, the son of director Otto Preminger.

The film will be begin at 1 pm in the Lafayette Library, located in the Don Tatzin Community Hall.

Admission is $5 for everyone. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online through the East Bay Jewish Film website. Masks are required inside the library.

On Tuesday, June 7, Lynne Thorner will present a “deconstruction” of Casablanca, discussing what makes the film work. The program begins at 2 pm and will be conducted online through Zoom.

Redford Theatre ~ Originally built in the 1920s for silent movies, the Redford Theatre, located in Detroit, Michigan, will screen Casablanca over their “Love is Forever Weekend”, June 3 and 4, 2022.

On Saturday, June 3, the movie will be shown at 8 pm. On Sunday, June 4, Casablanca will be shown at 2 pm. Masks are recommended, but not required.

Tickets are $5 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased at the box-office, as well as online through the cinema’s website. A nominal fee will be added to each ticket purchased online.

Castro Theatre ~ The historic Castro Theatre, located in San Francisco, California, will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a decade-by-decade selection of movies. The festival will run from Saturday, June 3, to Sunday, June 12, 2022. Most shows will be preceded by a live performance by the cinema’s own David Hegarty on the Castro’s organ.

Casablanca will be shown at 9:30 pm on Sunday, June 5, during the “Decade of the 1940s”.

Admission to Casablanca is $18 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased at the box-office or online through the venue’s website. A nominal fee will be added to each ticket purchased online.

Old Town Music Hall ~ The Old Town Music Hall, located in El Segundo, California, will screen Casablanca over the weekend of June 11 and 12, 2022.

Lorre Film Scheduled for Castro Theatre Noir Fest

The Castro Theatre, located in San Francisco, continues its noir film festival, “I Wake Up Dreaming 2017: Sleep No More!”, with a showing of All Through the Night (1942), on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017.

All Through the Night will be shown at 7:15 only. Ministry of Fear (1944), also on the double-feature, will be shown at 5:30 pm and 9:20 pm.

In the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (2005), Stephen D. Youngkin chronicles the making of All Through the Night. Continuing to freelance at Warner Bros, Peter was called back to the studio to appear in what would be his second movie with pal Humphrey Bogart – but his first and only movie with Kaaren Verne, who played Bogart’s love interest on-screen. The young actress became Peter’s love interest off-screen, a relationship that led to marriage as the second Mrs. Lorre.

Lorre Double-Feature at Castro Theatre

At the Castro Theatre, in San Francisco, California, it’s a “Double Bogie and Huston” night on Sunday, April 30, 2017 – but it’s also a “Double Lorre” night, with showings of The Maltese Falcon (1941) and the restored Beat the Devil (1954).

Beat the Devil begins at 5:05 pm and 8:55 pm.

The Maltese Falcon will be shown at 7 pm.

The newly-restored version of Beat the Devil was shown earlier this year at the Film Forum in New York City, Feb. 17 to 23, 2017, and discussed here on the Peter Lorre News blog. The restoration has gone back to the original 35mm camera negative, as well as other sources, to re-create the longer uncensored – and never seen – version to be shown at the Castro.

Lorre Film Included in San Francisco Noir Fest

Elliot Lavine kicks off the final installment of his annual film noir fest “I Wake Up Dreaming” with a 35mm print of Peter Lorre’s Black Angel (1946), on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.

Black Angel will be shown at 6 pm and 9:50 pm. Nightmare Alley (1947), also on the double-feature, will begin at 7:45 pm.

The festival will run every Wednesday for five weeks, beginning August 3 and ending August 31, with a double or triple feature each Wednesday. All films but one will be shown in 35mm prints. The complete schedule is available on the Castro Theatre website.

On Sunday, August 11, 2013, the Castro Theatre in San Francisco will present a double-feature of digitally-restored Fritz Lang masterpieces – M (1931) and Metropolis (1927).

M will be shown at 1 pm and 6 pm. Metropolis will be shown at 3:15 pm and 8:05 pm.

Three Strangers On-Screen in San Francisco, Jan. 28, 2012

In a recent interview with Sean Martinfield of the San Francisco Sentinal, Eddie Muller lamented the slow death of 35mm.

When the Film Noir Foundation decided to add Three Strangers to the schedule of this year’s Noir City film noir festival, they discovered that a viewable 35mm print of the 1945 Warner Bros. movie did not exist.

But they didn’t scratch it off the list.

They opened their wallets and funded the preservation effort themselves. “I want people to see that movie now,” says Muller; “I want that film back in circulation now.”

Peter Lorre fans attending the FNF’s Noir City festival at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre this week will get that chance – Three Strangers will be shown three times on Saturday, January 28, 2012.

The annual festival will run 10 days, beginning Friday, January 20, and ending with an all-day Dashiell Hammett Marathon, including the 1931 and 1941 versions of The Maltese Falcon, on Sunday, January 29. The complete schedule can be found on the Noir City website.

So what will be the fate of Three Strangers when the Noir City festival ends?

The Film Noir Foundation plans to donate the preserved print to the UCLA Film and Television Archive – where it will reside with many other Lorre films and television programs, such as Crime and Punishment, Casbah, and episodes of Climax! and Checkmate.
