Virginia Cinema Screens Lorre Horror Classic

Lorre fans in the area of Richmond, Virginia, are in for a very special Halloween treat on Monday, October 7, 2024 – a showing of The Raven (1963) at the historic Byrd Theatre.

Produced by American International Pictures as an entry in their series of 1960s movies based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven stars Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff, and features a young Jack Nicholson as Peter’s son Rexford. Roger Corman directed the film.

Organized by the Poe Museum, located in Richmond, Virginia, the Poe evening begins at 7 pm. Victoria Price, daughter of Vincent Price, will introduce the movie and participate in a panel discussion. Ms. Price will also sign cookbooks and autobiographies, which will be available for purchase in the cinema lobby after the panel discussion.

Admission to the “Poe Museum Movie Night” is $9 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased at the Byrd Theatre’s box office. Tickets may also be purchased online through the Poe Museum website, as well as the Byrd Theatre website. A nominal booking fee will be added to each ticket purchased online.

The Byrd Theatre is located at 2908 West Cary Street, between North Shepard Street and North Colonial Avenue, in the Carytown district of Richmond, Virginia.

Parking is available on the streets near the cinema, as well as public parking garages. More information about parking, as well as directions to the Byrd, is available on the cinema’s website.

Spooky Season with Lorre

October means Halloween and spooky movies on television, and that includes Peter Lorre films are on the Turner Classic Movies channel, Talking Pictures TV channel in England, and Movies! Network in the United States.

In October, Bela Lugosi is the "Star of the Month" on TCM, and his films will be shown every Wednesday night, including the only film he made with Peter Lorre.

Oct 1 (Tues), 6:10 am, Movies! Network – Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961).

Oct 3 (Thurs), 8 pm, Movies! Network – Stranger on the Third Floor (1940).

Oct 3 (Thurs), 3:45 am, TCM – Mad Love (1935). TCM salutes horror classics, beginning at 12:15 am with House of Wax (1953), and continuing with Peter's first American movie. Note – In Canada, Stranger on the Third Floor (1940) will be shown instead.

Oct 9 (Wed), 10:45 pm, TCM – You'll Find Out (1940). Tonight, "Star of the Month" Bela Lugosi is saluted as a "horror comedian", with a series of comedies starring Lugosi. The actor appeared several times with fellow horror actor Boris Karloff, but only once with Peter Lorre, in this musical comedy starring Kay Kyser and his College of Musical Knowledge band. Kay and company are hired to play for a young debutante's 21st birthday in a mysterious mansion with seances, hidden panels, and attempts on the birthday girl's life before she can inherit a fortune.

Oct 10 (Thurs), 11:30 am, Movies! Network – Stranger on the Third Floor (1940).

Oct 14 (Sat), 6 am, TCM – Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). A mansion with 13 bodies buried in the cellar is the setting for this dark comedy about two little old ladies with an unusual charity. Note – In Canada, Devotion (1946) will be shown instead.

Sneak Peek at November, 2024

Darkness falls early in November, and on television, a handful of Lorre mystery films airs.

Nov 19 (Tues), TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). On TCM, the daytime theme is "Set in San Francisco" with several films in the City by the Bay, including this mystery classic about nefarious characters in search of a fabulous statuette.

Nov 22 (Fri), TCM – The Mask of Dimitrios (1944). On TCM, the primetime theme is "Film Noir", including this classic Lorre and Greenstreet mystery adapted from the novel by Eric Ambler.

Nov 24 (Sun), TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). On TCM, the primetime theme is "Humphrey Bogart Noir" – a double-feature of mysteries starring Bogart, beginning with the mystery classic that introduced Bogie to Peter Lorre.
