Film Noir Studies Includes Lorre Classic

On Sunday, March 6, 2022, The Maltese Falcon (1941) will kick off the fourth and final program of Hillsdale College’s 2021-2022 academic year with a study of film noir.

The schedule begins at 4 pm with The Maltese Falcon, followed by “Film Noir: An Overview History”, presented by R. Barton Palmer of Clemson University at 8 pm.

Nov. 22 (Mon), 12 noon, TCM – Around the World in 80 Days (1956). The daytime theme is "David Niven". Peter Lorre is one of many cameos in this star-studded extravaganza about the Victorian gentleman (Niven) who makes a bet with his fellow Club members that he can travel around the world in just 80 days.

Nov. 24 (Wed), 8 pm, TCM – Casablanca (1942). TCM ends their month-long salute to Sydney Greenstreet with the second of his films with Peter Lorre.

Nov. 24 (Wed), 12 midnight, TCM – The Mask of Dimitrios (1944). In this film adapted from an Eric Ambler novel, Peter Lorre plays a professor turned mystery novelist who decides to research the life and evil career of an international criminal and soon cross paths with the mysterious Mr. Peters (Greenstreet), who has his own reasons for locating the criminal.

SiriusXM Celebrates Lorre Birthday

The week of June 21, 2021, the Radio Classics channel – Channel 148 on the SiriusXM radio dial – celebrates the 117th birthday of Peter Lorre with two different 2-hour blocks of Lorre radio programs, hosted by Greg Bell.

Beginning Monday, June 20, 2021, and continuing throughout the week until Sunday, June 27, Lorre fans can enjoy eight of Peter’s old-time radio performances – as well as a Lorre-hosted episode of the Armed Forces Radio Services series Mystery Playhouse.

“Peter Lorre Special” includes two episodes from Peter’s own 13-week summer series Mystery in the Air, “The Marvelous Barastro” (August 7, 1947) and “Crime and Punishment” (Sept. 25, 1947); an episode of the anthology series Suspense, “Nobody Loves Me” (Aug. 30, 1945); and finally a guest appearance on Jack Benny’s show The Lucky Strike Program, “I Stand Condemned” (Mar. 24, 1946).

This episode survives as an installment of the Armed Forces Radio Service series Mystery Playhouse, a series of episodes originally broadcast on various mystery series, such as Mr. and Mrs. North, and specially-edited for American servicemen and women stationed overseas during World War II. Peter Lorre hosted many of these Mystery Playhouse episodes, including “Frizby Klizby”, which will air on the Radio Classics channel on the following dates and times –

It’s Rondo Time Again!

Named after 1940s actor Rondo Hatton, whose facial disfigurement by the disease Acromegaly led to a career in Hollywood horror films, the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are the annual award where ordinary fans of science-fiction, horror, and fantasy vote for their favorites among the categories Movies, TV, DVDs, Restorations, Books, Magazines, Magazine Cover Artwork, Websites, Blogs, Fan Events, and more.

Now in its 19th year, the Rondos will wrap up at midnight on Sunday, April 25, 2021, Eastern Standard Time – but there’s still plenty of time to vote.

In 2006, Stephen D. Youngkin won the Best Book of 2005 Rondo for The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (University Press of Kentucky).

This year, there are a couple of Lorre items on the ballot for the Best of 2020 ~

#5 – Best Restoration or Upgrade – Among the nominees is the Route 66 episode “Lizard’s Leg and Owlet’s Wing” by Retromedia.

This all-star extravaganza about a Victorian gentleman who makes a bet with his fellow Club members that he can travel around the world in 80 days won 5 Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. The film was nominated for three awards – Best Director, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.

Apr. 16 (Fri), 9:05 am, Movies! Network – Beat the Devil (1954).

Apr. 16 (Fri), 6 pm, TCM – The Maltese Falcon (1941). Peter Lorre’s first movie with Warner Bros, the studio he would become most identified with, received three Oscar nominations – Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Sydney Greenstreet.

Apr. 17 (Sat), 6:30 am, TCM – Meet Me in Las Vegas (1956). Peter Lorre makes a cameo appearance as a blackjack player in this musical, which received one Oscar nomination – Scoring of Musical for George Stoll and Johnny Green.

Beginning at 8 pm Eastern Standard Time, The Mask of Dimitrios (1944) kicks off a marathon of eight of the nine movies Peter appeared in with Sydney Greenstreet.

During the five years Peter Lorre worked at the Warner Bros. studio, he appeared in a total of nine movies with Sydney Greenstreet, beginning with The Maltese Falcon (1941), the first Warner Bros. movie for both actors, and ending with The Verdict (1946).

Lorre and Greenstreet frequently supported leading actors – Humphrey Bogart, Paul Henreid, and George Raft – but in The Mask of Dimitrios (1944), Three Strangers (1946), and The Verdict (1946), Lorre and Greenstreet took the main roles.

Historic Cinema Celebrates Birthday with Lorre Film

On Wednesday, March 18, 2021, the State Theatre, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, celebrates its 79th anniversary with a showing of Casablanca (1942).

The program begins at 7 pm.

The cinema remains under COVID-19 safety rules. Tickets must be purchased in advance through the State Theatre website or at the box office 30 minutes before the screening. The auditorium will be kept at 50% capacity, with seats blocked off. Masks must be worn at all times, including during the film. Concessions will not be sold. Ticket prices are $10.50 for general admission; $8.fo for students with valid ID, U.S. veterans, senior citizens; and groups of 10 or more. Members of the Michigan Theater may purchase tickets for $8.00.

The State Theatre opened on March 18, 1942, with the musical The Fleet’s In (1942), starring Dorothy Lamour and William Holden. With Casablanca opening in November 1942, the State Theatre very likely showed this classic film as well – as well as many other Peter Lorre movies.
