Restored Lorre Film at New York’s Metrograph

As part of their Sunday afternoon series “Old and Improved”, the Metrograph will present a restored print of Peter Lorre’s version of Crime and Punishment (1935) on Sunday, April 3, 2016. The restoration is courtesy of the Library of Congress.

The program will begin at 1 pm.

Admission for this matinee is $12 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased at the Metrograph box office 30 minutes before the first movie’s show-time. Tickets may also be purchased through the venue's website.

The “Old and Improved” Film Festival will run every Sunday from March 20 to April 24, 2016. The complete schedule is available on the Metrograph’s website.

The Metrograph is located at 7 Ludlow Street, in the Lower East Side of New York City, New York. The area was once a major hub of movie-going in the early part of the twentieth century.

Carolina Theatre Begins Film Fest with Lorre and M

The Carolina Theatre of Durham kicks off their Friday night Retro Film Festival with a double-feature of M and Shadow of a Doubt on Friday, April 1, 2016.

The program will begin at 7 pm in Cinema One.

Tickets are $9 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased at the Cinema Box Office, which opens 30 minutes before the first feature of the day. Tickets may also be purchased through the Carolina Theatre website by clicking the “Buy Now” button. On the Ticket Master website, click “Carolina Theatre Films – Retro Classics” for April 1, 2016, 7 pm. A nominal charge will be added to all on-line ticket purchases.

A Retro Pass, good for admission to the entire festival, is also available for $75.

In The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre, Stephen D. Youngkin recounts the making of M through interviews with director Fritz Lang and Peter Lorre’s younger brother Andrew, who visited the set. M was the first sound film for both Lang and Lorre – but it was not the first time Peter had stepped before the cameras, though he always said so in interviews with newspaper and magazine reporters. The long-thought-lost silent movie Die verschwundene Frau (The Missing Wife, 1929) is actually Peter’s first movie credit.

A secret he kept to the end of his life.

Lorre Film at Concord Library, March 18

At the Fowler branch of the Concord Free Public Library, the Friends of the Library ends their “Friday Flicks” program on a high note tonight, March 18, 2016 – a free showing of Peter Lorre’s first Columbia film Crime and Punishment (1935).

The “Friday Flicks” program began at the branch in West Concord, Massachusetts, this past January.

The movie will begin at 7 pm. Doors to the screening room open at 6:30 pm.

The Friends will provide free popcorn.

Lorre at Marys River Grange Movie Night. Feb. 25

Peter Lorre fans in the Philomath, Oregon, area can enjoy a free showing of My Favorite Brunette (1947) at the Marys River Grange on Thursday, February 25, 2016. It’s this month’s feature at the Grange’s Movie Night, held every Thursday.

Introduced by curator Ygal Kaufman, who is a Peter Lorre fan, the program begins at 7 pm and includes short subjects, cartoons, newsreels, and commercials originally shown when the feature was first released.

Admission is free for everyone. And fresh, unlimited popcorn is available for $1.

Fathom Events Presents The Maltese Falcon, Feb 21 and 24

In 2016, Fathom Events and the Turner Classic Movies channel will expand their popular “Big Screen Classics” series from a few times a year to once a month, and in February, Lorre fans can enjoy The Maltese Falcon (1941) in cinemas on Sunday, February 21, with an encore showing on Wednesday, February 24. Warner Brothers salutes the movie’s 75th anniversary.

The program begins at 7 pm, local time, with a special introduction by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. Some theaters will also have a 2 pm matinee.

Arsenic and Peter Lorre in Jersey City

With the annual Academy Awards coming up in Los Angeles, the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre, located in Jersey City, New Jersey, salutes three actors who never won an Oscar – Cary Grant, Peter Lorre, and Raymond Massey – with a showing of their Warner Bros. movie Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. The film is part of the cinema’s festival “Oscar Oversights”, which begins on Friday, Feb. 19.

Arsenic and Old Lace will begin at 8:30 pm.

Robert Osborne Gettysburg Event Canceled

Due to illness, Turner Classic Movies channel host Robert Osborne has cancelled his upcoming appearance at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016.

The 83-year-old Osborne was originally scheduled to host a screening of Casablanca (1942) and discuss with Majestic Founding Executive Director Jeffrey Gabel the importance of movie theaters in small towns such as Gettysburg.

The Majestic Theater hopes to reschedule his appearance later this year. More information, including refunds to ticket holders, is available on the cinema’s website.

Robert Osborne Event in Gettysburg Sold Out

TCM’s Robert Osborne Hosts Lorre Film in Gettysburg, Feb. 13

Peter Lorre fans in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, area will be in a for a special treat this coming Valentine’s Day weekend – Robert Osborne, long-time host of the Turner Classic Movies channel, will present a special showing of Casablanca (1942) at the Majestic Theater on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016.

Mr. Osborne will discuss with Majestic Founding Executive Director Jeffrey Gabel, the important role movie theaters have played in America’s small towns such as Gettysburg. In 2016, the Majestic celebrates its 90th anniversary as Gettysburg’s local cinema, beginning with silent movies in 1926 and moving on to sound features, many Peter Lorre films, including Casablanca, among them.

The program begins at 7:30 pm.
