Library Movie Schedule Includes Lorre

As part of their film series “Silver Screen Classic Movies”, the Auburn Public Library, located in Auburn, California, will present Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), starring Cary Grant, Peter Lorre, Raymond, Massey, and many more, on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

The film will be shown at 12 noon, 3:30 pm, and 7:30 pm in the Beecher Room.

The program is free, and anyone may attend.

The Auburn Public Library is located at 175 Almond Street in Auburn, California.

Parking is available on the street near the library.

The “Silver Screen Classic Movies” series is shown the first Saturday of each month at the Auburn Public Library. The schedule for 2022 is available on the library’s website.

Film Noir Studies Includes Lorre Classic

On Sunday, March 6, 2022, The Maltese Falcon (1941) will kick off the fourth and final program of Hillsdale College’s 2021-2022 academic year with a study of film noir.

The schedule begins at 4 pm with The Maltese Falcon, followed by “Film Noir: An Overview History”, presented by R. Barton Palmer of Clemson University at 8 pm.

In this film adapted from an Eric Ambler novel, Peter Lorre plays a professor turned mystery novelist who decides to research the life and evil career of an international criminal and soon cross paths with the mysterious Mr. Peters (Greenstreet), who has his own reasons for locating the criminal.

SiriusXM Celebrates Lorre Birthday

The week of June 21, 2021, the Radio Classics channel – Channel 148 on the SiriusXM radio dial – celebrates the 117th birthday of Peter Lorre with two different 2-hour blocks of Lorre radio programs, hosted by Greg Bell.

Beginning Monday, June 20, 2021, and continuing throughout the week until Sunday, June 27, Lorre fans can enjoy eight of Peter’s old-time radio performances – as well as a Lorre-hosted episode of the Armed Forces Radio Services series Mystery Playhouse.

“Peter Lorre Special” includes two episodes from Peter’s own 13-week summer series Mystery in the Air, “The Marvelous Barastro” (August 7, 1947) and “Crime and Punishment” (Sept. 25, 1947); an episode of the anthology series Suspense, “Nobody Loves Me” (Aug. 30, 1945); and finally a guest appearance on Jack Benny’s show The Lucky Strike Program, “I Stand Condemned” (Mar. 24, 1946).

Youngkin, who began his research in the 1970s and interviewed Peter’s brothers Andrew and Francis, his first wife Celia Lovsky, his sister-in-law Barbara through his second wife Karen Verne, his daughter Catherine Lorre, friends, fellow actors, and the directors, producers, and crew who worked with him throughout his career.

These interviews shed light on Peter’s birth on June 26, 1904, his childhood, his early days in theater, his career on film, radio, and television, and his sad final days.

The Appendix of The Lost One includes the most complete list available of Peter’s credits – radio, film, stage, and television.

The Lorre radio programs airing this week in honor of Peter’s birthday are available through many merchants. Many of Peter’s movies, as well as some of his television appearances, are also available on DVD.

It’s Rondo Time Again!

Named after 1940s actor Rondo Hatton, whose facial disfigurement by the disease Acromegaly led to a career in Hollywood horror films, the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards are the annual award where ordinary fans of science-fiction, horror, and fantasy vote for their favorites among the categories Movies, TV, DVDs, Restorations, Books, Magazines, Magazine Cover Artwork, Websites, Blogs, Fan Events, and more.

Now in its 19th year, the Rondos will wrap up at midnight on Sunday, April 25, 2021, Eastern Standard Time – but there’s still plenty of time to vote.

In 2006, Stephen D. Youngkin won the Best Book of 2005 Rondo for The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (University Press of Kentucky).

This year, there are a couple of Lorre items on the ballot for the Best of 2020 ~

#5 – Best Restoration or Upgrade – Among the nominees is the Route 66 episode “Lizard’s Leg and Owlet’s Wing” by Retromedia.

A favorite of nightclub comedians, Peter called himself the most imitated man in Hollywood, and in this book, Matthew Hahn discusses the many Lorre caricatures throughout Peter’s career and after his passing in 1964.
