Lorre Classic Screens in Culpeper, Virginia

The Library of Congress brings its February month of love on screen to a close on Saturday, February 25, 2023, with a free showing of Peter Lorre’s first American film Mad Love (1935) at its campus in Culpeper, Virginia.

Mad Love begins at 2 pm. Also on the program is the short film Freshman Love (1931), starring Don Tomkins and Ruth Etting.

The program is free for everyone. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Seating is first-come, first-serve. Face masks are recommended, but not required. Patrons must go through a security check, and no large parcels, purses, or backpacks are permitted.

The Library of Congress Packard Campus Theater is located at 19053 Mount Pony Road in Culpeper, Virginia.

Parking is available in the campus lot. Access to the parking lot begins one hour before show time at 2 pm. Entrance into the building begins 45 minutes in advance, and the theater opens for seating 30 minutes before curtain.

Lorre Classics at British Film Institute

The British Film Institute celebrates their magazine Sight and Sound’s “Greatest Films of All Time” with special showings of two Peter Lorre classic movies – Casablanca (1942) and M (1931) at the BFI Southbank, located in London, England.

Casablanca, number 63 on the list, will be shown the following dates and times ~

• Monday, February 6, 2023 – 8:30 pm
• Sunday, February 12, 2023 – 1:20 pm
• Tuesday, February 14, 2023 – 2:30 pm

M, number 36 on the list, will be shown on these dates and times ~

• Thursday, February 16, 2023 – 8:40 pm
• Wednesday, February 22, 2023 – 6 pm

Admission is open to non-members of the BFI, as well as members. Ticket buyers may choose to purchase a “Gift Aid” ticket, which will contribute 10% of the ticket price to the work of the BFI.

Non “Gift Aid” tickets are available at the following prices. Evening and weekend prices are £10.50 for BFI members, £12.50 for non-members, and £3 for children 16 and under. For senior citizens (age 60 and above), students, unwaged and disabled visitors who are also BFI members, admission is £8.20, and for non-members £10.20.

Tickets may be purchased through the BFI box office, located in the main foyer. Tickets may also be purchased online through the BFI website. Click the “Buy” button beside the date and time of choice on either the Casablanca or the M page. Non-members will be charged a per-ticket booking fee of £1 for each ticket sold, to a maximum of £3 per transaction.

The BFI Southbank is located on Belvedere Road, on the South Bank of the Thames in London, England. Directions to the BFI are available on the cinema’s website.

Parking is available at the National Theatre, and the APCOA South Bank. The BFI is also well served by public transportation. The closest underground station is Waterloo. Exit Waterloo by the South Bank exit. More information about public transportation is available on the venue’s website.

Radio Series Includes Lorre Episode

The syndicated old-time radio series “When Radio Was”, broadcast daily over SiriusXM, as well as many other radio stations, will air an episode of Peter Lorre’s 1947 summer series Mystery in the Air on Thursday, January 26, 2023.

Host Greg Bell will present Mystery in the Air, “The Marvelous Barrastro” (August 7, 1947), followed by Chandu, the Magician, “The Spy” (November 9, 1948).

On SiriusXM, this edition of “When Radio Was” will air over the Radio Classics channel, channel 148, at 12 noon Eastern Standard Time, and 9 am Pacific.

Many local stations throughout the United States also air “When Radio Was”. Local stations are listed on the When Radio Was website. To find a local station, select a state from the drop-down list under “Find a Local Station” (in the third column of the home page) and click the “Find” button. Lorre Classic at Coronado Film Fest

The annual Coronado Island Film Festival, held in Coronado, California, kicks off the 2023 season with a screening of moviefan favorite Casablanca (1942) on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

The movie will be screened at the historic Vintage Village Theater, a restored movie palace located on Orange Avenue in Coronado, California.

The doors open at 5 pm, with a “Meet and Greet”, including complimentary beverages. The film program begins at 5:30 pm, with a vintage cartoon followed by Casablanca.

Tickets are $15 for all seats. Tickets may be purchased in advance through the Coronado Island Film Festival website. Click the “Purchase Tickets” button and select Casablanca. Tickets may also be purchased at the film festival table at the Vintage Village Theater, beginning at 4:45 pm on the day of the screening.

The Vintage Village Theater is located at 820 Orange Avenue, in Coronado, California.

TCM Celebrates Sydney Greenstreet Birthday

On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, the Turner Classic Movies channel celebrates the 143rd birthday of frequent Lorre co-star Sydney Greenstreet with a day of movies featuring the rotund actor, beginning at 6 am Eastern Standard Time.

The celebration begins with four Peter Lorre movies, then ends the marathon with their first pairing.

Sydney Greenstreet was born on December 27, 1879. After a long career in British and American theater, he began a film career at age 61 in The Maltese Falcon in 1941 and continued for another decade before retiring.

In the pages of The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre (2005), Stephen Youngkin recounts the on-screen partnership of Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet through nine movies and several radio plays in the early and mid-1940s, ending with The Verdict in 1946.

The Appendix of The Lost One includes a list of both their movies and their appearances on radio.

Radio Classics Christmas Week Includes Lorre

Every December, the satellite radio service SiriusXM airs Christmas-themed old-time radio episodes on the Radio Classics channel – and among the programs, Lorre fans will find Peter’s Suspense episode, “Back for Christmas”.

This version of the John Collier story originally aired December 23, 1943. “Back for Christmas” was Peter’s fourth of six appearances before the microphone of the anthology series, airing over CBS every Thursday night.

Peter plays Hubert Schumacher, a Swiss professor of botany who digs a Devil’s Garden as a bed for rare orchids in the cellar of his estate. While his overbearing wife Hermione plans their trip to America and Hubert’s lecture tour, Hubert makes plans of his own – involving a new Mrs. Schumacher and the disposal of Hermione.

Plans go awry . . . . on all fronts.

Brattle Thanksgiving Schedule Includes Lorre

At the Brattle Theatre, it’s “Give Thanks for Bogie!” over the Thanksgiving weekend, and Lorre fans in the Cambridge, Massachusetts, area can give thanks for Peter, too, during showings of Casablanca (1942).

The movie will be shown on Saturday, November 26, and Sunday, November, 27, 2022, at these times ~

• 1 pm
• 3:30 pm
• 6 pm
• 8:30 pm

The film will be screened on a 35mm print.

Matinee prices are $12 for general admission. Evening prices are $14 for general admission. Admission is $12 for children under 12; students with proper student ID; military with valid ID; seniors age 65 and older; and Brattle members.

Tickets may be purchased at the box office, which opens 30 minutes before the first show of the day. Tickets may also be purchased online through the cinema’s website. Click the show-time and select a ticket option from the list. Tickets may be picked up at the “Will Call” office. A nominal fee will be added to all online purchases.

The Brattle Theatre is located in Brattle Hall, at 40 Brattle Street, a block from Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Also located in the building are the Algiers Café and the Alden and Harlow Restaurant. The cinema’s entrance is on the left side of the building – look for the sidewalk poster case and the marquee.

Parking is available at meters around Harvard Square, as well as nearby parking garages. The Brattle Theatre box office will validate parking tickets for the Charles Square Garage and the University Place Garage.

The Brattle Theatre is well-served by public transportation – both MBTA bus routes and the subway.
